When people sacrifice their leisure time for owning more of materialistic things (e.g. working overtime because I want an iPhone), that society is plagued by alienation, the disease of modernity.
More leisure time means more time spent with friends and family. But when one doesn't have real human connections, what is one to do? Where is one to derive the meaning from? Then consumption becomes their goal, and work provides the meaning.
