If you ask somebody in India, “Why should you have children?” They’d probably say, “So that you have somebody to take care of you when you’re old.” Really? Is that why you should have children? I’d feel sorry for those kids then. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, as clearly as I can: I think good children should take care of their parents. Let me be even clearer: if children don’t take care of their parents, they’re bad children. But if parents had children just so they’d have someone to take care of them later, that makes them shitty parents. I’m sorry to say this. Actually, no, I’m not sorry. I agree with Elon Musk on this. He says children don’t owe anything to their parents, because they didn’t ask to be born. But parents owe everything to their children, because they chose to bring them into the world. So while I believe children should take care of their parents, I’ll also call out parents for being assholes if they think of kids as retirement insurance. You have children so you can experience the truest source of meaning, and the joy they bring to life. That’s why you bring children into the world. Not so they can take care of you. Assholes!
