The One Definition of Love
Love is a word that is used in many different contexts. Love between couples is different than love between siblings, which is different than love between parents and children, which is different than how you love your neighbor or how you love humanity.
You may not talk to your friend for years, but you may still feel the connection, the love. You may never hug your parents, but you may still be there for them. That’s love too.
So, can there be one definition of love that encompasses all these different variants of love in all contexts?
Yes, and I’ve got it for you. Maybe you’ll hear it for the first time, but when you hear it, you’ll see how simple it is and how much it makes sense.
Love is the ability and the willingness to sacrifice.
When you are willing to sacrifice something, be it your time, your financial resources, or your mental energy, when you’re willing to take on any sort of inconvenience for someone else, that’s love.
Now let’s test this out.
When you’re walking down the street and you see a beggar and give them money, you’re parting with money. That’s love. You may have a bitter relationship with your parents, but if you provide for them when they need it, that’s love. When you decide to carry trash in your pocket instead of throwing it on the street, you are taking on some inconvenience. That’s love for your surroundings, for your country.
Love is the willingness to sacrifice. That’s it.
