Promise, is triumph of emotions over rationality. But often not in the long run. Considering mercurial nature of human mind, and unpredictability in the universe (and the fact of free will being dicey) giving a promise and being held to it imposes unfairness on the promiser. At best a promise can be conditional, and that should be implied.
