Since we are not living INDEPENDENTLY in a jungle (he who thinks otherwise, frightens me), our survival is faciliated by myriad interactions between individuals in a society; and as such, one's long-run self-interest is best served only by considering the interests of all individuals in the system. In general, that means the right question to ask is not "What is good for me?" but "What is good for the society?" When the answers to the two questions differ vastly in most individuals, that society is on a brink of collapse.
