The Truth About Being “Judgmental”
There is a difference between judging a group of people critically, even with an insult, and treating an individual the same way. The latter is antisocial. The former is the mark of a thinking person. Let me explain with a simple example.
What’s a group most people agree should be judged critically? Politicians. Most people wouldn’t mind if I said politicians are greedy, corrupt, and a bunch of pigs. Most people would nod along with that generalization. But does that mean when I meet an actual politician, I’m going to call him a pig to his face? No. Generalization is not a flaw of character. It’s a quality. It means you’ve seen enough patterns of corruption among politicians to make that statement.
But if an individual politician hears that and takes it personally, accusing you of judging him, that’s his problem. That’s someone falling on the knife and stabbing himself. You made a general statement. If he chooses to personalize it, that’s on him.
Yesterday I put out a reel where I said that people get tattoos for attention, and that it’s a stupid way of getting attention. And so many people took it personally and said I was being judgmental. No. That’s exactly why I’m explaining the difference.
A generic opinion about a particular thing is not the same as judging an individual. Do I have friends with tattoos? Of course. I have relatives and cousins with tattoos, and I’m nothing but nice to them. But I’ve seen enough patterns to generalize: people often don’t think through their tattoos. I’ve seen many regret them. I’ve seen them make poor choices in other parts of life too. That’s my personal experience, and based on that, I formed this general opinion. Just like you have general opinions about politicians or any other group.
It’s not hard to understand. So if you’re taking it personally, the problem is with you. I’ve said this before: when something offends you, look for the truth in it. Only truth offends. If my opinion is stupid and doesn’t apply to you, why are you rattled?
