I lose respect for people who say they don’t judge anybody, that they’re completely non-judgmental. Because they’re liars If you have a moral compass, if you hold any values at all, you are bound to judge society or groups of people against those values. That’s what the brain’s primary function is: to judge your surroundings so you can optimize for your well-being in the environment. To not judge, to be totally non-judgmental, is to not have any values at all. What do you stand for then? Now, I also see the value in being non-judgmental in social interactions. So my position is that you should not judge any individual you’re interacting with, because everyone has personal reasons, everyone and is a sovereign individual. Unless they are directly harming you, you should not judge them. For example, in my value system, feminism is bad. But if a feminist is speaking to me kindly, I’m not going to be judgmental in that interaction. I’ll extend friendliness, keep an open mind, and try to understand their individual point of view. But zooming out, I can still hold the opinion that feminism is bad, and feminists on the whole are harming society. You must judge society and groups of people if you are a thinking person. If you say you don’t do that, you’re a liar. But at the individual level, you should be completely non-judgmental if you want to be sociable. Those two positions don’t have to be mutually exclusive.
