In a good family unit (and in a community) the giver should not think that he is 'giving'. But when the receiver forgets that he is 'receiving' (the fruits of the other's efforts), then that distorts the (receiver's) notions of rights and responsibilities, and the tendency to free-ride emerges. If this goes on, in time the unit collapses. Free-riding, I think, is a highly underrated crime.
